NOTRE DAME REBORN PART III

Visiting the cathedral for the first time since the fire — the amazing artwork

Re-entering the cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris after it’s 5 and a half year closure due to the tremendous fire of April 2019, one is struck by the cathedral’s rebirth — as if it was brand new again. 862 years old this April, Notre Dame boasts many significant events in its long history, including:

The coronation of a king — an English king! On 16 December 1431, Henry VI of England, aged 10, was crowned king of France in Notre-Dame, because the church where French kings are usually crowned, Reims Cathedral was under French control, during the last years of the Hundred Years War.

Henry VI of England is crowned as King of France (artist unknown).

Henry was born during the Hundred Years' War (1337–1453), at the beginning of its third phase. He is the only English monarch to have been crowned King of France

In 1548, Huguenots (French Protestants) damaged some of the statues of Notre-Dame because they considered them to be idolatrous.

Napoleon Bonapart was crowned emperor in Note Dame on 2 December 1804 by Pope Pius VII. Anointed by the pope, Napoleon crowned himself with a replica of Charlemagne's crown, after which he crowned the Empress Joséphine, only the second woman ever in French history to be crowned. The first was Marie de' Medici.

The Parisian goldsmith guild made regular donations to the cathedral chapter, since 1449. Beginning in 1630, the guild started donating works of art which came to be known as the grands mays. Each one showed scenes from the Acts of the Apostles, with only the most prominent painters of the day commissioned for the work.

Of the seventy-six paintings that had been donated over the years, most were confiscated during the French Revolution and dispersed to regional museums in France.

Thirteen eventually were returned to Notre Dame and suffered water damage during the fire. They have since been restored.

One of the most magnificent pieces is the 14th century wall that encloses the choir area. The wall is sculpted in wood, and each panel depicts a scene from the life of Jesus.
