NOTRE DAME REBORN - PART IV

Final thoughts about the “new” 862 year old cathedral
5

Visiting the cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris is a highlight of any visit to Paris. One can visit over and over again, never tiring of the majesty, the beauty, the history and the mystery of this, the heart of Paris.

Notre Dame on the Île de la Cité is indeed the center, not only of Paris and France, but of the entire French-speaking world.

Many people before they enter the cathedral look on the parvis (square) in front of Notre Dame for the marker that indicates Kilometer Zéro. From this place all distances in the French-speaking world are measured.

Now that the cathedral has reopened, some five and a half years after the tragic fire of April, 2019, it is advised that you make a reservation to enter. You can get into Notre Dame without a reservation, but the line is much longer. And as the nicer Spring weather approaches (when?? Hopefully soon) attendance will only grow.

You can reserve a timed-reservation spot on this official website, and entrance is free: NOTRE DAME DE PARIS

The fire broke out on 15 April 2019, at exactly 18:18 CEST. Investigators believe that the fire was started by a cigarette or an electrical short circuit. The vaulted ceiling prevented the interior from being completely damaged by the burning roof as it collapsed.

Firefighters and church officials were able to move many art works and religious items to safety, including the Crown of Thorns, brought back to Paris in the 13th century by King Louis IX (Saint Louis). Miraculously, the cathedral's altar, two pipe organs, and three 13th-century rose windows suffered little or no damage.

The cathedral was closed immediately. For the first time since 1803, Notre-Dame did not hold a Christmas Mass that year.

The cathedral has since reopened to visitors 7 December 2024.

Thanks to the courageous actions of Paris’ sapeurs-pompiers (firefighters) over many hours of battling the raging fire, the cathedral was saved.

The iconic bell towers of Notre Dame, with breathtaking views and a special history of its own (see Victor Hugo’s Hunchback of Notre Dame), are expected to reopen sometime in the Summer 2025 for visits by the public.

Visiting Notre Dame de Paris, whether you are religious, spiritual or not, is a magical, mystical experience. Full of the ambiance that Paris exudes in abundance, one can spend a lifetime contemplating the stories written in its stones, in its sculptures and carvings, in its stain glass windows, chapels, art work, towers and the surrounding area.
